GM Liu Yan on the verge of triumph

The young Chinese GM Liu Yan finished second in the Orillas de Mar tournament
The Chinese GM Liu Yan achieved an extraordinary result in the Orillas de Mar tournament, held in Tenerife from June 25 to July 2, 2023. Liu scored 7 points out of 9, the same score as the winner, the Indian GM Gupta, but lost the technical tiebreak.
Liu had a perfect tournament, never losing a game. He won against some of the best players in the tournament, including the Italian GM Alberto David and the Indian WGM Vantika Agrawal.
One of Liu’s most spectacular games was against the French IM Aldo Haik. Liu won the game in just 25 moves, with a brilliant attack that surprised Haik on the queenside.

Liu was born in Beijing, China, in 2001. He started playing chess at the age of six and quickly rose through the ranks. In 2018, he earned the title of Grand Master.
Liu has won numerous tournaments throughout his career, including the Chinese Junior Championship in 2017 and the Asian Junior Championship in 2018.
Liu’s performance in the Orillas de Mar tournament is his greatest victory to date. It is a sign that the young GM is ready to compete with the best players in the world.
